Two Cups of Coffee

Two Coffee Cups
Both images were painted in my oil painting class with Paul Abbott. Both are approximately three hour paintings each. The one on the right was done in my first class. I think it has a little more personality. The one on the left was done in the second class, it may be more accurate and offers more of a 3/D effect or quality.

What do you think? Be honest but please not brutal.

Coffee Cup 2

Coffee Cup 2

Hmmmmm another wonderful workout in oil painting with a palette knife and with the wonderful guidance of Paul Abbott. Learning to see the lights and darks, keeping the values true and correct. Wow what an exercise!.

I did this same coffee cup last week, and felt I still needed this valuable exercise. So here it is.

On December 4th I had my first art reception. Just for me! It was a wonderful night with good friends, music, drink and food. Thank you everyone for making the reception a perfect night!

With much gratitude and love,

Coffee Cup

Coffee Cup

Teresa Beyer

Usually when a cup of coffee is unfinished it usually means there is still coffee in the cup.

I have dabbeled in oils over the years and recently I have a strong desire to learn how to paint in oils. I went to my first class with Paul Abbott at the Art Store here in town. Wow what a challenging experience. For my first piece he had me paint a white coffee cup on a white background. This alone is a challenge in any medium but on top of that I was painting with a palette knife. This is as far as I got in 3 hours.

Paul is teaching me to look and paint what I see, for me it is a much needed review.

Painting in oils and using a palette knife feels like a huge change from brushes and watercolor which is just what I needed! I'm inspired and excited!

So not only will I be learning to paint in oils but I am going to learn to get messy, my hands, supplies, clothes, everything! Learning to not be so OCD.

Happy Painting,

Teresa

Magnolia Flower being photographed

This is a picture of the Magnolia Flower taken in my studio/garage photo area. I have placed a yard stick next to it - to give you an idea of the size. The little white things on either side are my lamps for lighting, and the silver arm on the ceiling is for my garage door.

Happy ThanksGiving Everyone!

I have so much to be grateful for . . .

My studio has been re-organized and re-organized and I am finally comfortable in my space, comfortable enough to paint again. I have had this oversized watercolor paper in storage for some time now. The size is referred to as elephant paper (30x40) and that is what I used for this painting. The Cuesta's may recognize this image as they have a smaller one from a few years ago.

Once again I have used a limited palette, Quinacridone Magenta (red), Aurelian (yellow) and French Ultramarine Blue on Arches 300 lb cold press paper. The painting is at the framers (The Frame & I) now and will be picked up on Sunday November 28th. In time to be hung at the Sacred Bean, an organic coffee shop.

I will be having a show at the Sacred Bean the month of December. For those of you who live in the area you and your friends are welcomed to the Artist Reception, December 3rd for light appetizers and wine. I look forward to seeing you.

Happy Painting,

Teresa

Another Work in Progress

Teresa Beyer
Work in Progress

Watercolor on
Arches 300 lb paper

I have a beautiful, dear friend who is going through some serious changes in her life. Change for some is very fearful, only because the familiar can be so comforting because of it's familiarity, even if it isn't good. It's familiar. So does that mean we are opening like a Pandora's box, so to speak - with all the change having a negative effect? Or is it a change like a caterpillar cocooning and transforming into a butterfly? Is change accepted and embraced and a matter of perception?

And why is it that when we are living in fear we feel the most alone.

And what happened to my perspective?

Peace and Blessings

I havent worked on a full size sheet of watercolor paper in some time, it is such a pleasure to work BIG. I started out working in Indigo only, I got a little board and wanted to add some color so I introduced an unknown red, and now I'm worried that the piece isn't relating. I thought about turning it over but then decided to work through the painting.

I left my glasses there so you could get an idea of the size of paper I'm working on.

I have been experimenting with various substrates, trying to find a canvas that I can paint on using watercolors and totally avoid the framing. So I came across this little gem the other day and ordered a few. What I learned with this piece is that I need to wet the canvas before painting. There seems to be a gesso on it, a gesso that was formulated for water based paints - it still needed to be wet before applying pigment.

I had a great time painting this piece! Besides learning how a new canvas reacts, I also learned that on a painting like this I dont necessarily want to sign the piece in a corner. This piece can be hung on any side or corner. Who am I to determine the top?

The pink in this is Opera Pink (bright pint) mixed with various blues and Winsor Purple. A hot piece with all these warm colors. The yellows are Aureolin (sometimes called Cobalt Yellow) and New Gamboge (like a musturdy yellow), with some Burnt Sienna (a warm mid brown) and Sepia (a rich brown pigment).

I painted this piece at my new spot (gallery/studio) in the Indoor Market Eumundie on Miller Valley next to Napa. Those of you who live here in Prescott I would love to see you. The Market is open Fri. Sat. 10 - 5, and Sun. 10 - 4. We will be celebrating our Grand Opening the weekend of Sept. 11th. It will be a fun celebration with entertainment, food, and several interesting Vendors. I would love to share some of my newer pieces with you.

Montezuma Castle is a National Monument located near Camp Verde, AZ. A well preserved cliff dwelling built and used by the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people around 700 AD. Several Hopi Clans are able to trace their roots to immigrants from the Montezuma Castle. When European Americans discovered the Castle in the 1860's they named them for the Aztec emperor Montezuma II, due to mistaken to the mistaken belief that the emperor had been connected to it's construction.

I love the background on this piece. The salt was once again successful. Other than that I don't really feel that I captured the miracle of the tree blooms, and in my excitement I didn't think about the placement of the whole thing, resulting in a poor composition.

Purple Crocus Flowers

Purple Crocus Flowers
7.5 x 10.25
Watercolor on 300 lb paper
$65.

I did a smaller version of this - only I focused on the fore front flower. I knew I would love painting in the purples. I mixed a different violet for this piece - I used a Cobalt Blue with Alizrian and some Q. Rose. I think the cobalt adds more life to the piece.

My goal is to create a "Daily Painting" and would that include weekends? Get Pay Pal up and running on my web sight www.teresabeyer.com. And post maybe one of the paintings up on ebay for auction. Or maybe every single one. I'm paralyzed with a bit of fear. Fear of such a huge comittment. I tried it once before and it is a huge challenge to do a painting everyday. And then would I have time to do the larger pieces? Would I have the energy and inspiration?

For now it is another beautiful day in Prescott, AZ.
Happy Painting!

While in Nebraska I visited the Sturges Museum. The grounds were expansive with a large pond and lots of ducks and geese. The pond was quite large, in one area there was a foot bridge.

The pond had several banks of Water Lilies - one of my favorite subjects to paint. There was one area that was quiet, inviting and meditative. I believe I have captured that stillness in the painting.

Man & Woman

Man & Woman
Diptych
24 x 18
Oil on Panel

This is a painting done on two panels, (each one is 24 x 18) often referred to as a diptych. Another one of the few oils I have done. I gessoed the board with a gold tone - drew out the image with an oil crayon and did the painting with water based oils, since my studio is not well ventilated I do not like to work with turpentine.

This painting just came forward - it was a wonderful experience.

Feng Shui believes that if you are ready and wanting to be in a relationship you should have sets of two through out your home, so that you can see things in pairs. I painted these two pieces specifically to attract a partner. Framed them and placed them over my bed. Low and behold, today I'm in a loving relationship. So now I am ready to release these two beautiful paintings. I'm wanting to create more of a self portrait of us to once again hang over the bed.

These are little studies of my grandson, whom for various reasons, I don't know. The mixture of feelings I get when I see photo's of him on F/B. All the questions that run through my head about this little guy.

I'm not really a portrait artist, but I can do a decent painting or drawing of an adult. But let me tell you doing babies is a whole other story. Capturing their newness and freshness was a challenge as you can see. I will continue trying.

I ususally like to work from my own references but when I saw this photo of his I had to ask for permission. I was so glad he didn't ask a bunch of questions, he just readily said YES!

Thank you Jason.

Hobo Jungle

While living in Ventura, CA I would often take early morning bike rides along the coast. There was one little piece of land at the top of Ventura, between Surfers Point and Dolphin Playground. The train would cross a bridge on the way in and out of town, right there, and from what I'm told is home to the homeless.

One afternoon I decided to go in on my bike with my camera, to go shooting. I saw some people sitting at a picnic table but other than that this gorgeous little piece of land was empty of people. I was expecting to find some cardboard homes or trash, some kind of clues -.-. Instead it was quiet and clean. And very inviting. The homeless were not living there at the time. I never went back - but I have this beautiful painting from a wonderful afternoon of exploring.

As you can see there is still one egg to be hatched. And you would think this little guy would be making a lot of noise - but he is just waiting with his little beak wide open.

I am enjoying this little nest in the wreath. And the front door is still being very much used. Most of the time mama is gone and the little hatchlings are all huddled and sleeping.

Eumundie has opened, and we are getting a lot of traffic. My friends here in Prescott come by and see me!

Tea Pot

I painted this a couple of years ago in a Sedona workshop with Gretchen Lopez. Gretchen is an amazing artist, and one of the best teachers I have ever studied with.
This was meant to be an under painting a technique frequently used by the Old Masters. An under painting is the values, the lights, and darks are laid in and then the color is applied over it. I was so pleased with the painting at this stage that I stopped.
Today I was finally given access to my gallery booth at the Eumundie Indoor Market. So I was busy watching the walls being painted by Marty and Emmet. These men put in a full days work and then as a favor - came over and painted the walls. Thank you both, I couldn't of done it as quickly or as neatly.

Bird Nest

Bird Nest
5 x 7
Watercolor on 300 lb paper

One night about a week ago, I was taking my pack of pups out for their evening walk. On my front door is a wreath and this tiny bird flew out just as I had stepped threw the threshold. Scared the bajeebees out of me.

When we got back from our walk - I peeked inside the wreath to find this sturdy, well constructed, tiny nest, with four little light blue eggs. What an exciting discovery!

Today I had a little time to paint so I painted the little "Bird Nest."

On another note, I have all my supplies to revamp my booth at the indoor market. We (my fiance) and I were going to start painting the booth tomorrow (7/13). He is leaving to go out of town several days early - tomorrow (7/13 a.m.). So now I'm going to be doing the painting. . . alone. YIKES!!!! Wish me luck in this transformation.

Irises II

Irises II

This is a watercolor done on Clayboard (hardboard panel coated with soft absorbent kaolin clay). Painting on clayboard threw me for a curve, as this is really slippery and not absorbent at all. Any time I tried to lay color on top of dried color it would almost remove the first glaze. The beauty of working on this piece of clayboard is that it has it's own frame. (I have included in the image of the work) Since watercolor should be protected I could not put this piece under glass. I then sprayed several applications of a UV fixative. The finished piece is light weight, is protected and doesn't have a glare from glass.

Feng Shui, strongly recommends groupings of two's if you are single - and want a relationship. A stronger composition from an artist standpoint - are odd number groupings, 3, 5, etc.

I did several paintings of groupings of two's a couple of years ago. This one I kept, it reminded me of a little family. I have that now, the painting served its purpose. I have another painting in mind - but I'm having to clear wall space, and letting go.

Dhalia

I felt the need to know what kind of flower this is, especially since I have painted several versions of it. So I went to the nursery this weekend and found out it is a Dhalia. My friend Dave Cumby suggested this to me from an earlier painting.
I did a smaller version of this "Solar Flares" that I absolutely loved! So I thought I would try a larger version.

On July 16th Eumundi an Indoor Market will be having their Grand Opening. I will be one of vendors. As you come in I'm in the far left corner, I believe booth #8. The market is located next to Napa - 531 Madison Ave.

Canyon de Chelly

I was going through my photo's and found this one taken by my artist friend and teacher Linne Thomas. I thought this would be a fun one to do, and a little break from the florals. As I worked on it - I could totally see how this would be fun to do an abstract of. Alas I am not schooled in the principles of abstract art. As you can see I kind of barely went abstract.

I started with a limited triad of W.Blue - W. Yellow and Cad Red. As I got into the painting I added Burnt Sienna.

Canyon de Chelly is located in northeastern Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. It is the ruins of early indigenous tribes that lived in the area, including the Anasazi and Navajo. Canyon de Chelly (de shay) consists entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land.

Solar Flares

I feel as if I have been struggling with writers block. I think it is behind me.

This is a study for a larger piece - as I struggled with the shading in the yellow, I gave up the struggle and tried different approaches. Once the technical part was over I was able to fully enjoy the process. A space I love to be in.

I took a photo of a flower at the local nursery - while trying to think of a title for the piece I realized if I'm going to be doing all sorts of flowers - I better learn the names. The title for this piece describes it well - wouldn't you agree?

Happy! Happy! Painting,

A Poppy from the Planter

A Poppy from the Planter
7.5 x 10.25
Watercolor is Available

This little poppy is a blossom from one of my pots on the front patio. I think the petals on this flower look so fragile and delicate. Yet it has survived wind, and sun.
I planted my pots a little early and we had two more days of snow, I thought for certain my flowers would freeze. To my amazement they are thriving!
As the background was drying I took a drippy brush of water and dripped onto the background, as the drips dried I sprinkled regular table salt on the the drips and that is how I achieved my background.

Angel of Grief

How can I explain or even begin to describe, the pain we have all experienced in one form or another. The Grief of lost hope and promises unfulfilled.
The trauma and pain of a relationship severed suddenly, without closure or last good byes. The lonely nights and the empty bed.
Harsh cruel words spoken, only to be forgotten and replaced, by the gentle caress of lost love. Fighting the desire to call or search my love out! Only to remember there is no escape from our fighting and my feeling of suffocation of being trapped in my own home.
Losing a part of me that can never be regained, my naivete. The trust lost, but with time I will once again regain.

Angel of Grief is an 1894 sculpture by William Wetmore Story which serves as the grave stone of the artist and his wife at the Protestant Cemetery, Rome.

A Jar of Tulips

I am so pleased with this painting. I love how the back lighting creates a glow to the flowers, and the contrast of the light and dark. Tulips are probably one of my favorite flowers, and they are simply displayed in this glass jar, yet they look so elegant.
